Dust diseases are chronic lung illnesses caused by inhaling harmful dust or powder particles such as crystalline silica, asbestos, hard metals like tungsten or cobalt, aluminium and beryllium, bagasse, cotton or mouldy hay, straw or grain.
Most people typically come into contact with these harmful particles in workplaces where dust particles are created by sanding, cutting, or grinding substances which naturally contain these particles; or by disturbing these dust particles during renovation, earthworks, or demolition of buildings which contain dust disease causing products like asbestos.
Exposure to these harmful dust particles results in the thickening and scarring of the lung tissue resulting in symptoms like shortness of breath or abnormal breathing, persistent coughing, mucus in the airways, sudden and rapid weight loss, fatigue, and chest pain.
There is typically a delay between exposure and eventual diagnosis. If you think you have been exposed or have been diagnosed with a dust disease (see our list below), make contact with MD Law Group today for early advice.
